Dual/Double Degree

DUAL / DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAM

Dual / Double Degree is referred to combination of two academic programs from the same or almost the same field of study (discipline) involving cooperation between two universities/institutions whether it is locally based or abroad with equal understanding and leads to the award of two degrees (scrolls) from both universities involved.

Dual Degree with  UTHM-Hochschule Heilbronn (HHN), Germany

Dual/Double Master’s Degree Programme: Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Malaysia and Hochschule Heilbronn (HHN), Germany

Earn two Master’s degrees in one programme through the Double Degree collaboration between Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Hochschule Heilbronn (HHN), Germany.
Selected students will spend one semester at HHN and graduate with Master’s degrees from both institutions.

Partial DAAD scholarships may be available starting Summer Semester 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Demonstrate strong academic performance
  • Be highly motivated and prepared for an international academic experience
  • Hold Malaysian or German citizenship (exceptions may be considered)
  • Fulfil both UTHM and HHN admission requirements

Application for Admission

  1. Research Proposal Preparation
  • Prepare a research proposal under the guidance of a UTHM supervisor.
  1. Application to Centre for Graduate Studies (CGS)
  • Submit your application via the official UTHM admission portal:
    https://wapps.uthm.edu.my/intake/
  • Select the Dual Degree Programme option.
  • Complete the application according to the provided instructions.
  1. Application Result and Offer Letter
  • Check your application status at:
    http://cgsoffer.uthm.edu.my/
  • Successful applicants may download their conditional offer letter from this portal.
  1. Application for GPPS (via Supervisor)
  • Apply for Graduate Research Assistantship / GPPS through your supervisor (if applicable).

Programme Structure and Timeline

Semester 1 (At UTHM)

  1. Research Methodology Course
  • Register for Research Methodology (MDC10101) via SMAP
  • Attend all online classes and present the research proposal paper
  1. Application for Student Exchange to HHN
  • Nomination through discussion with supervisor
  • Submit online application after receiving an email invitation from HHN
  1. Student Visa Application
  • Follow visa procedures and document requirements via:
    Federal Foreign Office – Student Visa (University/Studienkolleg)
  • Book visa appointment through:
    VFS Global – Germany
  1. Proposal Defence
  • Schedule proposal defence with supervisor
  • Submit thesis draft (Chapters 1–3) to faculty and panel
  • Prepare and submit a UTHM JMER paper
  • Present pass proposal defence

Semester 2 (At Hochschule Heilbronn, Germany)

  1. Appoint a co-supervisor from HHN
  2. Participate in student exchange at HHN (1 semester)
  3. Fulfil UTHM–HHN dual degree academic requirements:
    • 15 ECTS for academic coursework
    • 15 ECTS for research thesis
  4. Apply for credit transfer for the Research Methodology course from UTHM

Semester 3 (Back to UTHM)

  1. Submit a Scopus-indexed publication paper
  2. Present at a research symposium
  3. Submit 99% completed thesis draft to faculty and panel
  4. Conduct Pre-Viva presentation
  5. Revise thesis based on Pre-Viva feedback
  6. Conduct Final Viva Voce according to the UTHM CGS procedure, with minimum requirement of one (1) Scopus-indexed publication (proceeding/journal) as first author
  7. Submission of one dissertation according to the UTHM format

Dual Degree with  UTHM-Prince of Songkla University 

Programme Structure

The dual degree programme follows a coordinated study plan jointly developed by FKMP, UTHM and Prince of Songkla University.

Students will:

  • Complete two thesis under academic guidance from both universities

Upon successful completion of all requirements, students are awarded degrees from both FKMP, UTHM and Prince of Songkla University.

How to Apply

  1. Students should indicate interest early in their studies
  2. Consultation with the FKMP Program Coordinator  is required

Currently, Dr Muammar Mukhsin Bin Ismail (refer picture) had successfully graduated under the program. He was awarded a Dual Degree for his Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering from Prince of Songkla University and UTHM respectively during the convocation ceremony held in May 2022.
